Cable Co. (Challenger Cable Bermuda) announces the next phase of their project to bring a new undersea fiber optic cable network connecting Bermuda to the Unites States of America. During the first two weeks of March, a research vessel the “RV Geo” surveyed the inshore waters off of Devonshire bay. The purpose of the survey was to determine a route for landing the cable that will avoid our coral reefs and be ecologically sensitive to the environment.

The “Challenger Cable” will be installed on the ocean floor between Bermuda and a Verizon Business landing station, located in Charlestown Rhode Island. From there the submarine system’s data traffic will be transported over a resilient fiber ring network to the major international telecommunications gateways in New York City.

Initially the Challenger Network will be provisioned to carry 20 Giga Bits per second of data with the ability to expand to as much as 320 Giga Bits per second as the telecommunication needs of Bermuda grow.

Alcatel-Lucent, a French telecommunications Manufacturer is the supplier and primary contractor for the installation of this undersea fiber cable network. Over the summer a cable ship will be laying the cable, with a projected completion, and ready for service date during the fourth quarter of 2008.
